A journey through Patagonia’s wildest landscapes — glaciers, turquoise rivers and endless remote beauty.
Stretching more than 1,200 kilometers through the heart of Patagonia, the Carretera Austral is one of the world’s most remarkable journeys. Remote, pristine and impossibly beautiful, this route connects glaciers, fjords, dense temperate forests and turquoise rivers in a way that feels untouched by time. It’s the Chilean Patagonia as locals know it — raw, authentic and deeply moving.
The northern section begins among lush forests, steep fjords and hanging glaciers, with protected areas like Queulat and Pumalín showcasing the region’s wild biodiversity. Closer to Coyhaique, the landscape opens into valleys sculpted by rivers and canyons, offering one of the most scenic transitions in Patagonia. South of Cerro Castillo, the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic, shaped by wind, ice and mountain ranges that rise abruptly from the road.
Further along, the Carretera Austral reveals some of its most iconic wonders: the Marble Caves on Lago General Carrera, the turquoise flow of the Baker River, and the vast grasslands of the Chacabuco Valley — home to Patagonia National Park, a world-leading conservation project. Beyond, small communities like Puerto Río Tranquilo or Caleta Tortel offer a glimpse into the quiet rhythm of Patagonian life. This is a journey for travelers seeking nature at its purest. Whether exploring national parks, hiking remote trails, meeting local communities or simply enjoying the silence of the road, the Carretera Austral delivers a deep connection to the land and a sense of discovery found in very few places on Earth.
