The Carretera Austral — Chile’s legendary Route 7 — is one of the world’s last great road journeys: 1,240 kilometers of raw wilderness, glacial fjords, ancient forests, and near-zero traffic. Traveling here from New York is a study in contrasts that our clients describe as profoundly restorative.
The route is accessed via Puerto Montt or Coyhaique, both served by daily connections from Santiago. Chile Undiscovered orchestrates every detail of your journey from the moment you touch down in Chile. We bridge the gap between your arrival and the wild, providing seamless transitions via 4x4 fleets or private helicopters to your first night on the Route.
Peak Season (December – February): Long days and mild temperatures (10–20°C) make this the best window for driving the Route. Wildflowers are in bloom and all lodges and ferries operate at full schedule.
Shoulder Season (October–November & March–April): Fewer vehicles on the road, more intimate experiences, and dramatic light. March is particularly stunning as the beech forests turn amber and red in early autumn.
Off Season (May – September): Many sections are passable but weather is severe. Recommended only for experienced expedition travelers seeking true remoteness.
