How to Get to Patagonia from the USA

Every flight, connection, and transfer — handled.

✈️ USA → Santiago, Chile (8.5–12 hours depending on origin) ✨ Overnight in Santiago (recommended) ✈️ Santiago → Patagonia (1.5–3.5 hours)

Route Overview

Patagonia from the United States is closer than most Americans imagine. Whether you're departing from the East Coast, the West Coast, or the American heartland, the journey to Chile's southernmost wilderness follows a reliable routing — and Chile Undiscovered handles every detail from your departure gate to your first night under Patagonian skies.

The standard gateway into Chile is Santiago (SCL), connected to major US hubs by nonstop or one-stop services. From Santiago, you continue south to one of two extraordinary destinations: Torres del Paine National Park or the Carretera Austral. Your choice depends on the kind of Patagonia you're looking for — and we're here to help you decide.

Best time to travel

Peak Season (December – February): Warmest and brightest, with the longest days. Both Torres del Paine and the Carretera Austral are fully operational. Book 12–18 months ahead for peak dates.

Shoulder Season (October–November & March–April): Fewer crowds, lower rates, and extraordinary light. March is particularly stunning — autumn colors on the Carretera, milder winds in Torres del Paine. Our most discerning clients often prefer these months.

Off Season (May–September): Remote and raw. Some lodges close, but those that remain offer exceptional value and a profoundly solitary experience.

Flights Details

Recommended Routing by City: Patagonia is accessed through different Chilean gateways depending on your destination. For Northern Patagonia and the Carretera Austral, the hubs are Puerto Montt (PMC) or Balmaceda (BBA). For Torres del Paine and the Deep South, it's Punta Arenas (PUQ) or Puerto Natales (PNT).

East Coast (JFK / MIA): LATAM operates nonstop flights to Santiago from both Miami and New York JFK. Flight time is approximately 8.5 hours from Miami and 10.5 hours from New York. American Airlines also offers connections through Miami.

West Coast (LAX / SFO): LATAM flies nonstop from Los Angeles (LAX) to Santiago in approximately 10 hours. This is one of the most convenient options for California-based travelers.

Midwest & Other Cities (ORD / ATL / DFW): Connections through Miami (MIA) or New York (JFK) are the most efficient routing, adding 2–3 hours to the total journey.

SCL → Patagonia: Domestic legs range from 1.5 hours (SCL → PMC) to 3.5 hours (SCL → PNT). LATAM and Sky Airline operate frequent daily service to all southern hubs.

Travel Tips

Which destination is right for you? If this is your first time in Patagonia, Torres del Paine offers the most iconic and immediately rewarding experience. If you've been before — or simply prefer the road less taken — the Carretera Austral will exceed every expectation.

Can you combine both? Yes. Chile Undiscovered designs multi-destination itineraries that include both regions, typically over 10–14 days. It's the ultimate Patagonian journey.

Entry Requirements: US passport holders enter Chile visa-free. Passport validity of 6+ months beyond your travel dates is required.

Currency: Carry USD $200–400 in cash. While your lodge experience is fully pre-paid, small tips and personal purchases are appreciated in Chilean Pesos, easily exchanged at SCL or in Puerto Natales / Puerto Montt.
