Valle de la Luna's wind-carved salt formations, dune ridges and canyon walls create a landscape so otherworldly it inspired its name. As the sun sets, the desert shifts through shades of gold, pink and violet, making this one of the most photographed sunset points in the Atacama.
At 4,300 meters, El Tatio is one of the highest geothermal fields on Earth, its fumaroles and boiling pools sending columns of steam into the freezing dawn air. Arriving before sunrise rewards visitors with the field's most dramatic display, as the rising sun ignites the vapor against the surrounding volcanic peaks.
Chile's largest salt flat stretches across the desert floor in cracked white crusts, its Chaxa Lagoon sheltering three species of Andean flamingos against a backdrop of volcanoes. Sunset here turns the salt flat gold and pink, one of the Atacama's most serene wildlife settings.
The Atacama's high altitude, near-zero humidity and minimal light pollution make its night sky among the clearest on Earth, drawing the world's most advanced observatories, including ALMA and Paranal. Guided stargazing sessions here reveal the Milky Way, distant nebulae and southern constellations with a clarity rarely seen elsewhere.
