The short answer
Plan 7 to 10 days to explore one section of the Carretera Austral properly, usually the central Aysén region around Coyhaique, Cerro Castillo and Lake General Carrera. With 5 days you can see the highlights of that section at a fast pace. To drive most of the route, from Puerto Montt to Caleta Tortel or Villa O'Higgins, you need 14 to 21 days.
Why the Carretera Austral takes time
The Carretera Austral (Route 7) stretches for more than 1,200 km through northern Patagonia. Distances on the map look short, but:
- Several sections are gravel, so average speeds are low.
- Some legs depend on ferries with fixed schedules.
- Weather changes fast, and boat trips such as the Marble Caves depend on lake conditions, so a buffer day is wise.
- The best moments, like a glacier walk, a horseback ride or a day on the river, need full days, not quick stops.
How many days: sample plans
| Trip length | What you can see | Pace |
|---|---|---|
| 5 days | Coyhaique, Cerro Castillo and the Marble Caves at Puerto Río Tranquilo | Fast |
| 7 days | The above plus Exploradores Glacier, Lake General Carrera and the Baker River | Comfortable |
| 10 days | Central Aysén in depth plus Queulat National Park and Puyuhuapi to the north, or Patagonia National Park to the south | Relaxed |
| 14–21 days | Most of the route, from Puerto Montt or Chaitén south to Caleta Tortel or Villa O'Higgins | Full road trip |
5 days: the essentials
Fly into Balmaceda (BBA), the main airport for the central Carretera Austral, about an hour from Coyhaique. Spend a day around Coyhaique, a day at Cerro Castillo, and two days on Lake General Carrera for the Marble Caves, with a travel day to return. It is a lot in little time, so a private driver makes the difference.
7 days: the sweet spot
One week lets you add Exploradores Glacier and the turquoise Baker River and Lake Bertrand area, and still enjoy your lodge. This is the length most of our guests choose for a first visit. Stay near Coyhaique at Between Forest & Lakes, at the foot of the mountain at Beyond the Castillo, and by the lake at The Bertrand Stay. See Highlights of the Carretera Austral.
10 days: slow travel
Ten days lets you add the national parks: the hanging glacier of Queulat to the north, or the open valleys of Patagonia National Park to the south, plus time for fly fishing or a day on a working estancia such as Estancia Ñirehuao. See National Parks of the Carretera Austral.
14 days or more: the full road trip
Two to three weeks lets you drive most of the route, from the rainforests of the north to the boardwalk village of Caleta Tortel. Alternatively, use the extra days to combine the Carretera Austral with Torres del Paine. Read Carretera Austral vs Torres del Paine to decide.
Frequently asked questions
Can you do the Carretera Austral in one week?
Yes, if you focus on one section. Seven days is ideal for the central Aysén region: Coyhaique, Cerro Castillo, the Marble Caves, Exploradores Glacier and the Baker River.
Is 5 days enough for the Carretera Austral?
Five days is enough for the essentials around Coyhaique, Cerro Castillo and Lake General Carrera, at a fast pace. It is not enough to drive the whole route.
How long does it take to drive the whole Carretera Austral?
Plan at least two weeks, and ideally three, to drive from Puerto Montt to Villa O'Higgins with time to enjoy the stops.
What is the best airport for the Carretera Austral?
Balmaceda (BBA), near Coyhaique, for the central section. Puerto Montt (PMC) for the northern section.
When is the best time to go?
November to April. Summer (December–February) has the longest days; autumn (March–April) brings golden colors and fewer people. See why autumn is a great time to drive the Carretera Austral.
