Explora vs Awasi vs Tierra Patagonia: Which Torres del Paine Lodge Is Right for You? (2026)

Explora, Awasi or Tierra? A side-by-side comparison of the three best lodges in Torres del Paine: location, rooms, excursions, spa and who each one suits best, from a Chilean team that books them all.

The short answer

All three are excellent, all-inclusive and guided. The right one depends on how you want to travel. Choose Explora Patagonia if you want to be inside the national park, closest to the classic trails and the view of the Paine Massif across Lake Pehoé. Choose Awasi Patagonia if privacy matters most: every villa comes with its own guide and 4x4, so you never share an excursion. Choose Tierra Patagonia for striking architecture, a lakeside spa and a quieter base on the shores of Lake Sarmiento.

We book all three regularly, and none is "the best" for everyone. Here is how they really differ.

Explora Patagonia: inside the park

Explora's first lodge sits on the shore of Lake Pehoé, beside the Salto Chico waterfall, inside Torres del Paine National Park. That location is its biggest advantage: you wake up facing the Paine Massif, and the main trailheads are close, which means less time in a van and more time walking.

Mountain scenery in Torres del Paine National Park, Chile
Chilean Patagonia at its most dramatic.
  • Rooms: 50 in three categories — 36 Cordillera Paine rooms facing the massif, 8 Salto Chico rooms facing the waterfall and 6 larger Exploradores Suites.
  • Explorations: more than 40 guided options, from easy walks to full-day hikes and horseback rides, chosen each evening with the guides.
  • Good to know: there is Wi-Fi in the rooms and common areas, but Explora itself warns it can be unreliable this far south. Most guests are happy to switch off.

Choose it if this is your first time in Torres del Paine, you want to hike a lot, or you plan to combine it with Explora's other Patagonian lodge. Explora runs a 1.5-hour lodge-to-lodge flight to Explora Patagonia National Park on the Carretera Austral, one of the best two-lodge combinations in Chile.

Awasi Patagonia: total privacy

Awasi plays a different game. Its villas are scattered through lenga forest on a private reserve of about 7,000 acres at the edge of the park, and no two share a view. The defining feature is the service model: every villa gets its own guide and its own INEOS Grenadier 4x4, so you set the schedule, the pace and the route.

  • Villas: 14 stand-alone villas, each with a private hot tub. Two new Cenit Villas by architect Felipe Assadi open in January 2027, with rates from US$4,885 per night all-inclusive.
  • Excursions: fully private. When the weather turns — and in Patagonia it will — your guide simply changes the plan for you.
  • Season: Awasi opens for winter for the first time in 2027, from May to September.

Choose it if you are travelling as a couple or family and want an experience built entirely around you, or if you have mixed fitness levels in your group. In our experience it is the most expensive of the three, and it shows.

Tierra Patagonia: design and calm

Tierra Patagonia is a long, low building of weathered wood pressed into a bluff above Lake Sarmiento, designed by Chilean architect Cazú Zegers to look as if the wind had carved it. All 40 rooms face the lake and the Paine Massif.

A rainbow over the mountains — in Torres del Paine, the weather changes by the hour.
  • Excursions: the all-inclusive programme includes one full-day or two half-day guided excursions per day, in the park and on the surrounding estancias and pampa.
  • Spa: the Uma Spa, with an indoor pool looking out over the lake, is the best of the three for a proper rest day.
  • Good to know: it is seasonal, usually open from October to April, and it sits outside the park, so allow more driving time to the western trails and Grey Glacier.

Choose it if architecture and atmosphere matter to you, you want a balance of hiking and spa, or you are drawn to the quieter, eastern side of the park and its wildlife-rich pampa.

How to get there

All three are reached from Puerto Natales (PNT) or Punta Arenas (PUQ), both with flights from Santiago. Puerto Natales is the closer airport, about one to two hours by road depending on the lodge; from Punta Arenas allow four to five hours. From January to March 2027, runway works keep Puerto Natales open mostly at weekends, so some trips will route through Punta Arenas. Transfers from Puerto Natales are included in the all-inclusive programmes; at Tierra, transfers from Punta Arenas cost extra. For more on the park itself, see our Torres del Paine destination guide.

Frequently asked questions

Which Torres del Paine lodge is inside the national park?

Of the three, only Explora Patagonia is inside the park, on Lake Pehoé. Awasi sits on a private reserve at the edge of the park, and Tierra Patagonia is on Lake Sarmiento, just outside its eastern boundary.

Which is the most luxurious?

It depends on what luxury means to you. Awasi offers the most privacy and personal service, with a private guide and vehicle per villa. Tierra has the most striking design and the best spa. Explora has the best location for hiking.

How many nights do I need?

Three nights is the minimum we recommend, and four is better. Patagonian weather changes fast, and an extra day gives you a second chance at the views.

Are they all-inclusive?

Yes. All three offer all-inclusive programmes covering meals, drinks, guided excursions and airport transfers. Tips are usually extra.

When is the best time to go?

The main season runs from October to April. December to February brings the longest days and the most visitors; March and April are quieter, with autumn colour. See our month-by-month guide.

Can I combine two lodges?

Yes, and we often do. A few nights at Explora for hiking followed by Awasi or Tierra for a slower finish works well. You can also fly from Explora Torres del Paine to Explora Patagonia National Park on the Carretera Austral.
