Best Time to Visit Patagonia: A Month-by-Month Guide (and Why We Choose Autumn)

The best time to visit Chilean Patagonia is November to April — and if you can choose one window, March to mid-April. A month-by-month guide with official climate data, daylight hours and the right season for trekking, road trips, fishing and wildlife.

The short answer

The best time to visit Chilean Patagonia is from November to April. If you can choose one window, choose March to mid-April. Summer (December to February) has the longest days and the warmest weather, but also the most people and the highest prices. Autumn (March and April) keeps most of that good weather — Coyhaique still averages 17°C highs in March — while adding autumn colour, quieter roads and some of the year's best fishing. Spring (October and November) is fresh, green and quiet. Winter (June to August) is for travellers looking for snow, solitude and pumas.

First, which Patagonia?

Chilean Patagonia covers two very different regions, and the best month depends on which one you visit.

  • Aysén — northern Patagonia. The Carretera Austral, Coyhaique, Cerro Castillo, the Marble Caves, Lago General Carrera and the Baker River. Forests, rivers and lakes, with a milder climate in the sheltered valleys.
  • Magallanes — southern Patagonia. Torres del Paine, Puerto Natales and Punta Arenas. Granite towers, open steppe and glaciers, further south and more exposed to the wind.

Summer (December to February): long days, full lodges

Summer is high season for good reasons. Days are long — up to 16 hours 40 minutes of daylight at Puerto Natales around the solstice — temperatures are at their warmest and every boat, trail and lodge is open. February is the warmest and driest month in Coyhaique.

The trade-offs are crowds and cost. Chilean and Argentine summer holidays run through January and February, Torres del Paine's campsites and refugios book out months ahead, and the most popular lodges on the Carretera Austral fill early. Summer is also when the wind in southern Patagonia has its reputation — expect strong gusts on exposed ground around Torres del Paine.

Choose summer if you are trekking the W or O Circuit, travelling with children during school holidays, or want the longest possible days.

Autumn (March to April): the season we recommend

If you ask the people who live and guide here which month they prefer, many will say March or April. We agree, and here is the evidence:

  • The weather holds. March in Coyhaique averages 17.4°C highs and about 190 hours of sunshine — close to October and well above September. April is cooler, at 13.6°C, with about 10 rainy days.
  • The forests turn. The lenga and ñire beeches turn yellow, orange and red, usually peaking in April. NASA's Earth Observatory imaged this colour from orbit on 12 April 2026.
  • The crowds leave. School restarts in Chile in early March. Roads, trails and viewpoints that are busy in January are quiet by late March.
  • The fishing is excellent. Brown trout feed heavily before their late-autumn spawn, and many experienced anglers plan around March and April. See Fly Fishing in Patagonia in Autumn.
  • The light is better. A lower sun gives long, warm light through the afternoon — ideal for photography.

Autumn is especially good on the Carretera Austral, where the valleys are full of lenga forest. Read our Carretera Austral autumn road trip planner.

Choose autumn if you want a road trip, photography, fishing or a quieter experience, and you are comfortable with cool mornings.

Spring (October to November): green and quiet

Spring brings fresh green leaves, rivers full of snowmelt and long days without the summer crowds. In November there is already about 15 hours of daylight in Coyhaique. The red flowers of the notro (Chilean firebush) appear in late spring, and guanaco give birth from late November.

The weather is more changeable than in summer or early autumn, and some services are only beginning their season in October. The recreational fishing season in Aysén opens in October, with catch-and-release rules in the first weeks.

Choose spring if you want long days, green landscapes and lower prices.

Winter (May to September): snow and solitude

Winter is short on daylight — under 8 hours at Puerto Natales in June — and many lodges on the Carretera Austral close. But it has a following: snow-covered landscapes, almost no other travellers, and in Torres del Paine, the season many puma-tracking guides prefer, as the animals are easier to follow across open, snowy ground.

Choose winter if you want wildlife, solitude and snow, and you are travelling with a guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to visit Patagonia?

March. It keeps summer-like weather (17.4°C average highs in Coyhaique), with fewer people than January and February, the start of autumn colour and some of the best fishing of the year.

Is April a good time to visit Patagonia?

Yes, especially for autumn colour, photography and fishing. It is cooler (13.6°C average highs in Coyhaique) and a little wetter than March. Many lodges and tours close at the end of April, so plan your trip for the first three weeks.

When is the worst time to visit Patagonia?

It depends on what you want, but June to August has the shortest days, the most rain in Aysén and the fewest services open. It is only a good choice for travellers looking specifically for winter.

When is Patagonia least crowded?

Outside the Chilean summer holidays — October, November, and from late March onward. Avoid Easter week if you want quiet roads; in 2027, Easter Sunday is 28 March.

Is Patagonia windy all year?

Wind is part of Patagonia in every season, and it is strongest on exposed ground in the south, around Torres del Paine. The sheltered valleys of Aysén, such as Coyhaique, are noticeably calmer.

How many days do I need in Patagonia?

Seven to ten days for one region, and two weeks or more to combine the Carretera Austral and Torres del Paine. See How Many Days Do You Need for the Carretera Austral?
