The Carretera Austral in Autumn: A Road Trip Planner for March and April

March and April are the best months to drive the Carretera Austral: the lenga forests turn gold and red, the summer crowds are gone, and Coyhaique still averages 17°C highs in March. Our 10-day autumn route, month-by-month weather and what to know before you go.

The short answer

March and April are the best months to drive the Carretera Austral if you want colour, quiet roads and calm, clear days. The lenga forests turn gold and red, the summer traffic is gone, and Coyhaique still averages 17°C highs in March and 14°C in April. Plan 7 to 10 days for the central Aysén section, fly into Balmaceda (BBA), and aim to finish by the last week of April, when lodges and boat operators start closing for winter.

Why the Carretera Austral is one of the great road trips of a lifetime

The Carretera Austral — Route 7 — runs for about 1,240 km from Puerto Montt to Villa O'Higgins, through the least populated region of Chile. The Chilean Army began building it in 1976, and the last stretch to Villa O'Higgins only opened in 2000. This year marks fifty years since the first works, and the road still feels new: long sections of gravel, single-lane bridges over glacial rivers, and villages that were reachable only by boat or on horseback within living memory.

What makes it a once-in-a-life drive is not one sight but the sequence. In a single day you can go from temperate rainforest to open steppe, past a hanging glacier, along a lake the colour of a swimming pool, and into a valley where the only traffic is a gaucho moving cattle. Most famous road trips are about the road. This one is about everything the road finally lets you reach.

Why autumn is the season we recommend

We drive this road in every season, and autumn is the one we would choose for ourselves. Here is why.

  • The colour. Two native southern beeches drop their leaves: the lenga (Nothofagus pumilio) and the ñire (Nothofagus antarctica). As days shorten and nights cool, whole hillsides turn yellow, orange and deep red. NASA's Earth Observatory captured this from orbit on 12 April 2026, with the hills of southern Chile visibly red from space.
  • The road is yours. Summer brings cyclists, overlanders, full campsites and queues at the ferries. By March the Chilean school holidays are over, and by April there are stretches where you will drive for long periods without meeting another car.
  • The weather is still kind. According to the Dirección Meteorológica de Chile (1991–2020 normals for Coyhaique), March averages highs of 17.4°C and April 13.6°C, compared with 19.5°C in January. March has about 9 rainy days and April about 10 — more than summer, but far from the wet months of May to August.
  • The light. A lower sun means long, warm light through the afternoon. For photographers, this is the season.
  • The fishing. Brown trout feed hard before winter, and autumn is a favourite season for experienced anglers. We cover this in detail in Fly Fishing in Patagonia in Autumn.

A practical detail many guides miss: since April 2025 the Aysén region keeps summer time (UTC−3) all year. That means late sunrises in autumn — around 7:40 am in mid-March and closer to 8:40 am by the end of April — with light lasting well into the evening. Plan early starts accordingly; a sunrise at Cerro Castillo is an easy alarm in April.

A 10-day autumn route through central Aysén

This is the route we design most often for autumn travellers. It focuses on the central section of the road, where the colours are strongest and the distances are manageable.

Days 1–2 — Balmaceda to Coyhaique

Land at Balmaceda (BBA), about an hour from Coyhaique. Ease in with the Simpson River valley and the Reserva Nacional Coyhaique, where lenga forests ring the town. Stay in the forest at Between Forest & Lakes.

Days 3–4 — Cerro Castillo

Drive south over the Ibáñez pass, one of the most photographed stretches of the road in autumn. Hike to Laguna Cerro Castillo (a long day, done with a guide) or take shorter walks into the lenga at the foot of the mountain. Base yourself at Beyond the Castillo.

Days 5–7 — Lago General Carrera and the Marble Caves

Continue to Puerto Río Tranquilo for the Marble Caves, best visited in the calm morning hours, and the Exploradores Valley for the glacier. Then follow the lake south toward the Baker River, where the water runs a colour you will not quite believe. Stay by the water at The Bertrand Stay.

Days 8–9 — Valle Chacabuco or a day on the river

Choose between the open valleys of Patagonia National Park, home to guanaco and huemul, or a full day fly fishing the Baker or the lakes around Coyhaique.

Day 10 — Back to Balmaceda

Drive north with time to stop at every viewpoint you skipped on the way down.

For more time, add Queulat National Park and Puyuhuapi to the north, or Caleta Tortel to the south. See How Many Days Do You Need for the Carretera Austral? or our ready-made Highlights of the Carretera Austral itinerary.

What to know before you go in autumn

  • Fly into Balmaceda, not Puerto Montt. The northern ferry crossings run fewer departures outside summer, and the central section is where autumn shines. If you do start in the north, book the Hornopirén–Caleta Gonzalo crossing in advance and confirm the schedule with the operator, as it changes by season.
  • Finish by the last week of April. Many lodges, boat tours and guided hikes run until the end of April and then close for winter. In May you can still travel, but with fewer choices.
  • Watch for Easter. In 2027 Easter Sunday falls on 28 March, and the long weekend brings Chilean travellers onto the road. Book that week early.
  • Drive in daylight. Gravel, livestock on the road and early darkness make night driving a poor idea. Plan legs of three to four hours with stops.
  • Fuel up when you can. Stations are far apart south of Cerro Castillo. Never pass Coyhaique, Río Tranquilo or Cochrane with less than half a tank.
  • Pack for four seasons. A warm mid-layer, a real waterproof shell, a hat and gloves. Mornings can be close to freezing in April, afternoons warm in the sun.
  • Carry cash. Card payment is common in towns, but not everywhere in the countryside.

Frequently asked questions

Is autumn a good time to drive the Carretera Austral?

Yes. March and April combine autumn colour, fewer travellers and mild temperatures (17°C average highs in March, 14°C in April in Coyhaique). Most lodges and tours stay open until late April.

When do the autumn colours peak on the Carretera Austral?

Usually in April. Colour starts at higher altitude in March and moves down into the valleys through April. The exact timing shifts each year with temperatures.

Is the Carretera Austral open in autumn?

Yes, Route 7 is open all year. Some ferry crossings in the north run fewer departures, and some tourism services close from May, but the road itself does not close.

Do I need a 4x4 for the Carretera Austral in autumn?

Not on the main road, which is paved or well-maintained gravel through the central section. A high-clearance vehicle is more comfortable on gravel and on side roads such as the Exploradores Valley.

Is it too cold in April?

Not for active travel. April in Coyhaique averages 13.6°C highs and 4.6°C lows. Expect frosty mornings and pleasant afternoons, and dress in layers.

What is the best airport for an autumn trip?

Balmaceda (BBA), about an hour from Coyhaique, with direct flights from Santiago and Puerto Montt.
